No Beach Relief!

The highest temperatures today occurred right at the beaches. It got to 95F at Groton-New London, Sikorsky, and 96F at New Haven. Yuck. Even at the mouth of the Thames River at Ledge Light there was only temporary relief.

The reason has everything to do with the wind direction. A weak land breeze was just strong enough to keep the sea breeze at bay for most of the day. The sea breeze definitely tried though. Between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. the sea breeze kicked in at Ledge Light and temperatures fell from near 90 into the low 80s.

By 1 p.m. the sea breeze was done and winds picked up out of the north and temperatures spiked to 92 degrees.

I see sea breezes in our future tomorrow so there will be some relief after a pretty brutal day on the Sound.

Can We Break 100?

It will be close! Here’s the forecast I have going for the Hartford area.

For New Haven I’m expecting things to be a bit cooler with 91 on Wednesday and 96 on Thursday. We’re very close to holding the sea breeze at bay for New Haven/Bridgeport which could keep the mercury soaring even at the beaches – this is a tough call.

Here are some stats for 100º heat for the greater Hartford area…

  • 100º has occurred only twice in June (6/26/1952 and 6/30/1964)
  • Earliest 100º day on record is June 26
  • Warmest temperature on record is 103º (7/22/2011)
  • Back-to-back 100º days have occurred on 2 occasions (6/30/1964 -7/1/1964 and 7/19/1991-7/21/1991)

Here Comes the Heat

I’m not sure it will be a heat wave with 3 consecutive days in excess of 90 degrees but it will be close. This is one of our computer models that shows a fairly impressive surge of heat over the next 72 hours.

06z June 7 GFS MOS Forecast for BDL

Inland winds will tend to stay out of the west through Thursday which keeps the marine influence at bay and also downslopes into the valley off the Litchfield Hills. 100 degrees is possible on Thursday if the clouds stay away and winds remain gusty out of the west. HFD and BDL bake on westerlies but if the winds back to the south-southwest or south temperatures will wind up several degrees cooler.

Here’s another way to visualize the heat using a NAM 850mb temperature forecast. 20c is pretty darn warm and just about all of our models show 850mb temps above 20c late Wednesday and Thursday.
