Super Typhoon Haiyan may be the strongest typhoon in the western Pacific since the great Typhoon Tip in 1979 (per Ryan Maue). According to the Joint Typhoon Warning Center sustained winds with Haiyan are up to an exceptional 190 mph.
The typhoon will make landfall in the Philippines. The country is used to typhoon strikes, and significant typhoon strikes sometimes, but this storm is different. Tropical systems don’t get any more intense than this.
